World War II Kotobagari Replaced English Loanwords in Japanese Sports Media

During WWII, Japan’s kotobagari (word hunting) led to the disappearance of English loanwords from Japanese media. Baseball was renamed “yakyu” (field ball) and soccer “shukyu” (kicking ball), with only baseball terms reportedly surviving.
