Kyoto’s Public Bathhouses Decline From 500 to Around 100

Kyoto had roughly 500 sentō in 1965, when most residents used public bathhouses, but only around 100 remain across the prefecture today. The decline is attributed to the spread of home bathrooms and rising water-heating costs.
