Kissaten Coffee Shops in Japan Decline from 1981 Peak, While Showa-Style Revivals Attract Younger Customers
Japan’s kissaten coffee shops dropped from nearly 155,000 outlets at their 1981 peak to 58,700 by 2021 as chains expanded and many owners aged. A renewed interest in Showa-era, old-school cafés is drawing more younger customers.
