Hokkaido University Apologizes After Ainu Families Sue to Reclaim Ancestral Remains Collected Over a Century

Hokkaido University collected more than 1,000 Ainu ancestral remains for research over the course of roughly a century, based on views that treated the Ainu as “inferior.” Ainu families sued to have the remains returned, and the university has now apologized ahead of its 150th anniversary.
