Sawara Was Home to Japan’s First Western-Style Cartographer, Inō Tadataka
Sawara in Chiba Prefecture was the hometown of Inō Tadataka, who mapped Japan using Western surveying techniques. He managed his adopted family’s businesses before moving to Edo at age 50 to study astronomy.
